St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance
Every year agents from our brokerage turn out to volunteer at St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance. So I wanted to go ahead and share some details and information about this group and what they do. While we were there for our 2 hour window we loaded 960 boxes which equates to about 11,520 meals; there were 23 of us. Even in such a short amount of time, we can all make a huge difference to people who really need the help. We saw individuals, work and social groups all there to help the fight against hunger. If you are looking for a way to directly impact and aid folks who live right here in Arizona, please think about giving an hour or two of your time.
Sadly Arizona ranks very high for food insecurity; currently number 3 in the country; that is over 1.1 million people in our state living at or below the poverty line. The current situation is 1 in 6 Arizonans: who come from all communities, all age and ethnic groups and from all fifteen Arizona counties, are missing meals. This encompasses parents who skip a meal so their children can eat, elderly who have to choose between costly medicines or food and children who go to bed hungry because there is too little food available. St. Mary’s Food Bank distributes more than 275,000 meals A DAY in Arizona alone; but still more needs to be and can be done.
St. Mary’s Food Bank scores very well for making use of their resources according to independent charity rating sites. Charity Navigator reports that St. Mary’s spends almost 96% of monies for programs and services. In addition only 1.8% of their funds go to administrative costs. A full version of their review can be found here.
St Mary’s Food Bank Alliance has multiple avenues available to volunteer your time at multiple different locations, and you can of course also donate directly. They offer not only food boxes and soup kitchens; but educational as well as community programs designed to focus awareness and resources. They offer opportunities for not just individuals but corporations, schools and groups of all sorts. They are the worlds first food bank and have been helping people since 1967. They now assist people on a global scale, working through their world wide network to feed people who otherwise would go hungry. Please think about giving just a little bit of your time to help these dedicated people in their tireless efforts.
